From the end of St Marry River Road (around the 69 km mark), an old outfitter’s trail follows the St Mary River through open stands of spruce. The hard to track trail takes 1-2 days return to hike and has an elevation gain of only 240m (785ft). You can take a side trip near the headwaters to reach an attractive alpine lake to the east.
